So you’re about to embark on the joy of painting your home, and you want to know about Paint Quality. Whether it be the interior or the exterior, you want it to look as good as possible, for as long as possible.

You may have noticed that some interior paint jobs still look fresh and rich years after the kids have moved out, and some paint looks dirty and scuffed, and ready for a recoat a year after it’s been applied.

Some exterior paints look fresh after a decade of being exposed to the elements, and some start to flake and peel after just a few years.

The secret to long-lasting paints isn’t a secret. It’s simply people choosing high-quality paints over fewer quality choices.

Pay more for paint, but less for labour.

If you’re about to paint, no matter where or what you’re painting, it’s important to choose the best paint you can afford. Top-quality paints are designed to produce the best-looking, best-quality results that stand the test of time.

High-quality paint goes on faster and easier (less effort) because it flows evenly. This means less brushing, rolling, and retouching for you. Also, you’ll need fewer coats, and you’ll experience less splatter.

For exterior painting, a properly prepared surface painted with high-quality paint will require less maintenance between paint jobs. You’ll have less mould and mildew, and you’ll also have to worry less about painting and chipping.

Choose the right paint

Okay, so quality matters. How do you know what paint is high-quality? The quality of paint goes beyond price.

You’ll want to look for a paint that has a higher solids content because it will produce a thicker film.

Check the paint can label, or ask your supplier for the specification sheet (all paints should have one). Be sure the proportion of solids to solvent (carrier) is expressed by either volume or weight.

Latex paints range from 25% to 40% solids by volume. Oil-based paints can exceed 50% volume. A higher solids volume percentage is always better.

You’ll also want to check the paint warranty. You can assume that in general, the paint with the longer warranty is of higher-quality.

Remember that interior and exterior paints are formulated with different properties for their particular use. Don’t use exterior paint indoors, or vice versa.

If you have kids

Have a family, you probably know that homes with small children and pets have walls that take a lot of abuse. If you’re looking to upgrade, choose a product in a matte finish that is also washable. A washable paint is a sound investment for many families.

The quality of your tools matter. If you want the best paint, you don’t need to pay the highest price. Just do your research, and pick the best paint you can.
